St. Augustine’s King Street Bridge will soon get a rebuild. FDOT wants neighbors to share their thoughts

FDOT is holding a hybrid open house on Tuesday from 4:30 to 6 p.m.

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – Big changes are on the way for one of St. Augustine’s busiest gateways into downtown.

The King Street Bridge over the San Sebastian River is getting a complete rebuild before the end of this summer, and is expected to impact thousands of drivers.

That’s why FDOT says they want neighbors to share their thoughts first.

Crews will tear down and replace the King Street Bridge, which carries about 16,000 drivers daily, and it’s going to mean big changes to how people get in and out of downtown.

FDOT said work will start before the end of this summer and wrap up in 2027.

The project will demolish the current King Street Bridge over the San Sebastian River and replace it with a new one.

It will feature two 11-foot travel lanes, one 11-foot turn lane, and wider sidewalks.

It’s a $13.5 million project that also includes upgraded lighting, new bridge railings, and shared-use lane markings for cyclists.

During construction, traffic will detour onto Ponce De Leon Boulevard to cross the river, then loop around to Malaga Street.

That detour will be in place the entire time crews are working.

FDOT is holding a hybrid open house on Tuesday from 4:30 to 6 p.m. You can attend in person at St. Augustine City Hall or online.
