JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A major initiative in the Springfield neighborhood is the Emerald Trail project, which aims to connect historic neighborhoods and foster community engagement.
Despite a recent funding setback, the project is still moving forward and generating excitement.
In Springfield’s Klutho Park, the focus is on community, fun, and togetherness.
Resident Mike Hall appreciates the neighborhood’s walkability and vibrant atmosphere.
“It’s the walkability. There’s plenty to do, there are tons of restaurants and bars to hang out in, and just the community is great,” Hall said. “It’s just a fantastic place to live.”
The Emerald Trail, spearheaded by Groundwork Jax, is set to link more than a dozen historic communities, including Springfield.
CEO Kay Ehas described Springfield as an innovative neighborhood.
“Neighborhood personalities are different,” Ehas said. “And I would say Springfield may be one of the most open, welcoming neighborhoods that we have.”
The trail is the largest public infrastructure project in Jacksonville’s urban core, aiming to rectify past divisions and connect people through walking and biking paths. But the project faced a significant setback when $147 million in federal funding was lost due to the signing of the “Big Beautiful Bill.”
However, Ehas remains optimistic, citing strong community support.
“I had so many emails about, ‘OK, we’re with you,’” she shared. “We understand what an important project this is for the community.”
In addition to the Emerald Trail, the Hogans Creek Restoration Project is on the horizon. The project aims to repair aging infrastructure, improve water quality, and enhance flood management.
Ehas said she hopes to see more wildlife.
“Right now, the Arlington Expressway, the creek goes under, and you’re not going to get fish if you have to go through some dark tunnel,” Ehas said. “And when we first started this project, and we were kind of walking it, there were two manatees, like, south of the Arlington Expressway, feeding on the grass next to it, the creek, which is so cool!”
For residents like Mike Hall, the future of Springfield is bright.
“Living here, I feel a huge sense of pride,” Hall said, expressing excitement about the neighborhood’s growth and development.
The Emerald Trail and related projects promise to elevate Springfield, connecting people and fostering a sense of community.
