The event will begin at 7:45 p.m. at Friendship Fountain, where there will be food, music, voter registration, and assistance for the formerly incarcerated so they can regain their right to vote.

The bridge lighting will begin at 9 p.m. and will continue for 19 minutes, reflecting the significance of the date in 1865 when the last enslaved individuals learned of their freedom.

“This bridge lighting is a celebration of Black culture and our ancestors,” President Kelly Frazier of the Northside Coalition said. “It’s about shining a light on our history and our unwavering spirit in the face of the ongoing struggle for equality and justice that the Black community faces. It is also a protest against the state’s suppression of our local freedom of expression. We will be seen and we will be heard.”

Members of the community, local leaders, and allies are encouraged to attend the event to celebrate Black history and resilience, and witness this vibrant display of solidarity and history.
