Friday is expected to be the busiest day to travel for Memorial Day weekend.
More people are choosing to take road trips, meaning the highways and interstates are going to be congested at different times over the next four days.
AAA says the best time to drive Friday is before 11 a.m.
On Sunday, it is better to drive before 1 p.m. and before 2 p.m. on Monday.
The worst times to be on the road on Friday are between noon and 8 p.m.
On Sunday, it is expected to be bad between 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. and between 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Memorial Day.
Millions of drivers
More than 45 million people are expected to travel somewhere within the United States this Memorial Day weekend, with close to 40 million of them opting to drive.
There is an increase of more than a million drivers on the road this year compared to 2024, according to AAA.
News4JAX met a couple early Friday morning who are driving from South Carolina. The pair are making a stop in Daytona and then heading to Kissimmee before going back to South Carolina on Monday.
This is their first time taking a road trip for Memorial Day weekend, and they said they had been in the car for more than 6.5 hours before making a pitstop at St. Johns Rest Area off I-95.
“I get to constantly drive,” one man said. “There is no stopping. There’s no traffic, no nothing. Just go.”
He said the trip has been pretty smooth.
“I’ve been asleep,” his significant other said.
Tow to Go
AAA’s “Tow to Go” program starts Friday night and lasts until Tuesday morning.
That is the free program to get your car towed to a safe location in an effort to keep impaired drivers off the roads.
Drivers can get their cars towed to a safe location within a 10-mile radius starting at 6 p.m. and lasting until 6 a.m. Tuesday.
It’s designed as a last resort, so drivers should make other arrangements ahead of time whenever possible.
For Tow to Go, call 855-286-9246 to get your car towed, if needed.
The Tow to Go program is offered in Florida, Georgia and nine other states.
