JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – In a heartwarming kickoff to Channel 4’s all-day Passion 4 Pets Adoption Event, Clay County Animal Services took center stage, showcasing one of their long-term shelter residents, a lovable dog named Pumpernickel, in hopes of helping her find a forever home.
Clay County Animal Services Shelter Operations Coordinator Katelyn Smith joined The Morning Show to introduce viewers to the sweet, brown-eyed pup who has captured many hearts at the shelter.
Pumpernickel originally arrived in 2023, was briefly adopted, but returned due to compatibility challenges—something Smith says the shelter actively works on to increase the adoptability of its animals.
“She’s incredibly smart,” Smith shared, demonstrating Pumpernickel’s ability to sit, lie down, and even offer her paw—all in exchange for a few treats and some praise. “Just a few sessions and she caught on fast.”
Pumpernickel has undergone socialization training, particularly to help ease her initial aversion to other animals. Now, she gets along with most dogs and is looking for an active, cat-free home that will continue to nurture her playful spirit and intelligence.

The segment underscored Clay County Animal Services’ no-kill policy and their commitment to ensuring every animal has the skills and support needed to become a beloved pet.
“If a baby isn’t adoptable at first, we make sure they learn the skills so they can go home,” Smith emphasized.
Whether it’s a playful pup like Pumpernickel or a curious kitten from a local shelter, today’s Passion 4 Pets event is about second chances, wagging tails, and opening hearts and homes to animals in need.
