JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Let me start by saying: surfing is tough. Hats off to people who do it regularly and with ease.
I had the experience of going through Mark Collins’ Surf Camp — it might as well be known as a boot camp.
I am proud to say that I was the first — and only — student to sign up.
On the one hand, I have been skimboarding since I was in elementary school, which mainly stays along the shoreline. This, however, was my very first time surfing.
While both activities require you to ride on water with a board, the techniques are very different.
Even though I struggled to catch a wave at Hanna Park, let alone stay on the board to begin with, I learned at least a few lessons about surfing.
This sport requires ideal conditions. It is important to check the tides, rip currents and ocean conditions online before heading to the beach to make sure you get the best waves.

During the surf camp, Collins taught me three important steps: standing, paddling and knowing the lineup.
The lineup refers to when and where you will be catching the waves. This is where surfers are seen waiting far out in the water to get the perfect ride.
Timing is everything.
You need some stamina and arm strength to paddle your board out in the water, while also fending off incoming waves.
Standing can be one of the most difficult parts. Not only do you have to paddle and time it out to catch the right wave, but you also have to launch yourself up to your feet, stay balanced and ride the wave properly.
Collins, who is an avid surfer with decades of experience, was an amazing teacher.
And it looks like I need a few more lessons….
