JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A man who crashed into a house after being shot, possibly during an argument, died Monday in Jacksonville, police said.
According to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office, the man found in the crashed car in Durkeeville was shot at least once and died after being taken to a local hospital.
JSO said the shooting death is likely linked to an altercation that happened around the same time nearby on 8th Street West where there were reports of gunfire.
Neighbors also told News4JAX that the incident began at a store on the corner of Myrtle and 8th streets.
They said an unidentified man robbed a store employee. According to the neighbors who said they knew the employee, the two men fought, causing the squabble to carry outside.
The neighbors said the unidentified man got in a car and tried to run over the employee.
They said that’s when the employee pulled out a gun and shot at the car.
“I heard the crash while I was in the house. My wife came and got me because she thought someone hit our car. I ran outside and saw the car crashed right there. The dude was in the car and saying, ‘Hey, somebody call the police, I‘ve been shot. Please call the police. I’ve been shot,‘” The neighbor said. “The neighbor right here called the police. When they came, he was responsive. I thought he was going to make it. Then next thing I knew, other officers pulled up and put tape around it. He didn’t make it.”s
JSO said it detained two people during its investigation but is still trying to figure out what happened, which is why the classification of the shooting is still pending.
JSO said the vehicle the man was driving had multiple bullet holes.
