Hill and Schmidt were among the nine people shot early Friday when police say 17-year-old Jaylen Edgar opened fire near two different intersections among a crowd of thousands that had gathered to celebrate Halloween. A tenth person injured in the aftermath was described by police as a woman who was trampled.

The University of Central Florida said later Friday that two of the people who were shot downtown were UCF students, including one of the victims who died.

It is with deep sadness that we share the tragic news that overnight in downtown Orlando, a shooting incident resulted in the injury of several bystanders and the devastating loss of two lives, including a student of our UCF community. Our hearts are heavy with grief as we mourn this tragic, senseless violence, which also resulted in the injury of at least one other student and may have impacted many students who were out celebrating Halloween and in the vicinity of this incident.

Police have recommended Edgar be charged with two counts of first-degree murder with a firearm and at least six counts of attempted first-degree murder with a firearm.

On Saturday, Edgar waived his first appearance in court, yet while he wasn’t there, his mother was. The state requested to have Edgar held until his adjudicatory hearing, which the judge granted. Orange-Osceola State Attorney Andrew Bain has said it’s possible Edgar could be charged as an adult.

Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer issued a local state of emergency Friday afternoon which requires bars to stop alcohol sales at midnight and puts a curfew in place for the downtown district between 1 a.m. and 5 a.m., effective immediately. The state of emergency is expected to last until Friday, Nov. 8.
