How to save big on groceries as students head back to school

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – With only one week until the school year begins for most students in our area, one thing is clear: children need to eat. In a time when everything costs more, being savvy can lead to significant savings.

We’ve previously discussed various ways to save money, from cashback apps to tax-free shopping days.

When it comes to grocery shopping, we’re familiar with weekly circulars, whether in print or digital format, showcasing the latest deals.

However, some stores are now thinking outside the box to help you save all season long.

As students head back to school, food habits change. They start packing lunches or buying lunches at school, and dinners often become on-the-go meals. Regardless of where you eat, food isn’t free. Grocery chains are vying for your attention with enticing deals.

For example, digital coupons are everywhere. You can find deals like a $5 off $25 coupon, buy-one-get-one-free offers, and other price reductions.

“Every dime counts right now,” says Winn Dixie Florida Regional Vice President Shawn Sloan. “That’s why we focus on these items to make sure we can keep that basket down.”

Winn Dixie has introduced a concept called “Price Hold,” ensuring that certain prices remain valid for more than a week.

“We have 1,000 plus prices in the store that are seasonally relevant,” Sloan said. “Right now, they’re summer-based, soon to be back-to-school items. We lower those items by about 20% and hold those prices all the way through the end of the season.”

You’ll see “Price Hold” signs throughout the store, so you won’t feel rushed to grab the deal.

Additionally, many stores are leveraging their apps to help you save money. These apps allow you to clip coupons, earn rewards, and even get cashback. With a bit of pre-planning, you can really save big.

“We give you points every time you shop in the store. These points can be used to buy groceries, essentially putting money back in your account,” Sloan said.

With these tips and tools, you can keep your grocery costs down as the school year begins.
