Going Ringside Ep. 103: Vince McMahon attorney says criminal investigation is over

This follows SEC fines announced against McMahon last week

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The attorney for former WWE owner Vince McMahon has released a statement indicating that his criminal investigation is over. This comes after the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) announced fines against McMahon last week for not disclosing hush money payments while he ran WWE.

Going Ringside covered this in-depth earlier this week asking the question of whether Trump could make McMahon’s legal troubles go away.

But now the attorney for McMahon has been quoted as saying his DOJ investigation is over and he will not be charged.

This was the attorney’s statement that appeared on multiple websites including Sportskeeda and Fightful:

“The recent federal investigation resulted in no criminal indictments from the SDNY, while the SEC settlement relates to minor accounting issues at WWE that have nothing to do with this case. Any claims to the contrary made by Janel Grant’s team are just another desperate PR stunt.”

This comes after attorney Anne Callis, who represents Janel Grant, the woman suing McMahon, released this statement that made it appear the Southern District of New York (SDNY) was still investigating McMahon.

“During his time leading WWE, Vince McMahon acted as if rules did not apply to him, and now we have confirmation that he repeatedly broke the law to cover up his horrifying behavior, including human trafficking. The SEC’s charges prove that the NDA Vince McMahon coerced Ms. Grant into signing violates the law, and therefore her case must be heard in court. While prosecutors for the Southern District of New York continue their criminal investigation, we look forward to bringing forward new evidence in our civil case about the sexual exploitation Ms. Grant endured at WWE by Vince McMahon and John Laurinaitis.”

In this episode, we break down these dueling characterizations of McMahon’s current legal status with a veteran defense attorney not affiliated with the case.
