News4JAX is celebrating Pride Month this June by shining a spotlight on the local organizations that serve our unique and vibrant LGBTQ+ community.
Founded in 1970, OneJax is a nonprofit that has promoted diversity as the foundation for a strong community for more than 50 years.
What began as a local chapter of the National Conference of Christians and Jews became OneJax Inc. in 2005.
While not specifically geared for LGBTQ+ community members, the mission of OneJax is to foster mutual respect in a spirit of shared humanity among people of all beliefs, faiths and backgrounds.
To do that, OneJax offers various bridge-building programs, including a civil discourse series called Breaking Bread and Barriers. The series brought people from different parts of town, different cultures and beliefs, and different political perspectives together to discuss topics that impact the local community.
The annual OneJax Humanitarian Awards recognize people making a difference in our city. This year’s honorees included Dr. Charles McIntosh, Dr. Johnnetta Betsch Cole, Debbie Buckland, Josh Martino, and John Peyton.
The group partners with JASMYN, a local LGBTQ+ youth organization, and this summer, OneJax will host the Sandy Miller Metrotown Youth program.
The middle school program is from June 23-26, and the high school program is from July 14-17.
