AAPI Heritage Month: News4JAX reporter goes back to his roots with a taste of Thai cuisine at RD International Market

‘We want to create a diverse place in Jacksonville’: Market’s assistant manager says it’s the perfect place to explore other cultures

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Komsan Thai Kitchen is coming up on its one-year anniversary in June.

It is located inside the RD International Market on Beach Boulevard, which is an Asian market filled with global foods and goods.

Assistant Manager Andrew Lin, who is a University of Florida student living back at home for the summer, said the market brings the local Asian community together in one place.

“It’s amazing,” Lin said. “It’s a lot of diversity, and I think that’s most important. We want to create a diverse place in Jacksonville.”

After you get your shopping done, there are plenty of restaurants to grab a bite to eat, including Komsan.

I decided to sit down and chat with Pintira Hendricks, who owns the restaurant with her husband.

“I was born and raised in Bangkok, and then I moved to Chon Buri, which is on the east coast,” Hendricks said.

Hendricks moved from Thailand to Jacksonville years ago and said the business has been doing well so far.

She was extremely kind and courteous, bringing out classic drinks and dishes like Thai iced tea, chicken Larb and Pad Thai for me to try.

It certainly brought me back to my roots.

My mother is from Thailand, and she came to the United States when she was just a child. Both she and my grandmother would make excellent dishes like chicken curry.

And let me tell you: there’s a famous saying that goes around.

There’s hot…and then there’s Thai hot. We love our spice!
