Four Cents: Jaguars just aren’t getting any better, time for a fresh start

The Jaguars dropped a 28-23 game to the Eagles on Sunday in Philadelphia. (George Varkanis, News4JAX)

Another one. I don’t even know where to start. Jacksonville’s 28-23 loss to the Eagles on Sunday was just all over the place. The Eagles made some absolutely wild plays and ultimately the Jags came up one play short in this one.

After the game, Doug Pederson answered multiple questions about the teams play with they need to “Coach better.” Short, sweet and to the point. And also a phrase that we have heard him say way too much over the last two years. Coach better.

If only it were that simple. You know what, maybe it is. If we just flip those exact words backwards, ‘better coach,’ because it is time for the Jags to find a better coach. In the last year, the Jaguars are 5-13.

They went from a team that was finding a way to win to back to a team that finds ways to lose. There has been a year to find way to coach better. They even brought in a new defensive coaching staff to try and coach better. But none of that worked. So, if it wasn’t clear before maybe it should be now. Maybe this group just can’t coach better and it is time for that better coach.

It would be sort of poetic if the stadium where Pederson has a statue was also the place that was the last straw in his tenure with the Jags. I don’t expect any mid-season fireworks this week, but it feels like any hope for this season has been sucked out of the season. If they were going to salvage the year the Jaguars needed to pull off some wins. They have had back-to-back weeks where they had a chance late only to come up short.

It is time to just flip it on it’s head and find a better coach. It’s just that simple.

No, coaching isn’t the only issue. Some of the players are at fault and the guy who is charged with putting together the roster is just as responsible as anyone else. Trent Baalke, I didn’t forget about you.

Change for the sake of change is bad and historically Shad Khan has been patient and avoided those sorts of rash decisions. But it is time for a big change and a fresh start, some fresh energy around the team or folks will just keep saying the same ol’ Jags as they watch opponents like Saquon Barkley hurdle backwards over players.
