With temperatures soaring, city officials are urging everyone to take precautions and make use of the resources available to stay safe, including two designated cooling centers for anyone needing relief from the heat.
The locations are at the following buildings until 6 p.m. on Sunday.
- Main Jacksonville Public Library (303 N. Laura Street)
- Legends Center and Gymnasium (5130 Soutel Dr.)
No registration or identification is required—just walk in and cool off.
Additionally, the Jacksonville Transportation Authority (JTA) is offering free rides to and from any cooling center. Just let your bus driver know if you are heading to or from a cooling center to receive complimentary transportation.
Jacksonville’s Chief Health Officer, Dr. Sunil Joshi, warns that symptoms such as headaches, nausea, vomiting, lightheadedness, or disorientation can be signs of heat stroke. If you experience any of these, seek a cool area immediately.
Even if your air conditioning breaks, remember that these cooling centers are open to every single person.
The dangers of extreme heat were seen during yesterday’s protest at Camp Blanding as fire rescue teams responded to several heat-related illnesses, and one person was taken to the hospital as a precaution.
City officials strongly encourage residents to seek out cool spaces if they begin to feel unwell.
