Audit finds DCPS complying with state’s school-based crime reporting following scathing report

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A substitute teacher at Southside Estates Elementary School was arrested Tuesday after officers found his car loaded with weapons and ammunition.

According to a message to families, Principal Teresa Dowdell-Brown said a staff member told school police that Abdiel Badillo-Martinez had a weapon in his car.

Police started an investigation and removed students from building 11, where Badillo-Martinez was teaching.

The letter said police found “multiple weapons, an extensive amount of ammunition, and a knife stored in his car.”

Brown said it did not appear that Badillo-Martinez was armed while he was in the classroom or the building.

The students returned to their classrooms after police determined it was safe.

Badillo-Martinez was arrested and faces multiple charges. He was also blocked from working with Duval County Public Schools in the future.

“The safety of your children is our first goal, and we all share in the partnership to keep our campus secure. In that regard, I appreciate your partnership in keeping our students and staff safe and for your support of our school,” Brown said in the letter.
