In my school days, Spanish always came naturally. I did well in my studies, earning praise from teachers who praised my rolling R’s. Despite a strong start with three high school courses and two in college, I allowed my practice to fade, never taking my language skills to the next level. And aside from sporadic encounters in work and daily life, I just didn't actively exercise those skills.

As I seek to enrich my personal and professional capabilities, the allure of mastering a second language, particularly the second most spoken language in the country, becomes increasingly appealing.

The quest for the best way to learn Spanish led me through various free apps and platforms, each attempt falling short. Not even the persistent notifications from the green owl app kept me engaged. While Instagram and TikTok accounts focused on language learning were available, they offered more infotainment than learning.

So, why not turn to one of the most recognized names in language learning: Rosetta Stone? Established in 1992, Rosetta Stone’s reputation for excellence, particularly for beginners like myself, has always been a draw. Now that their resources are accessible via a handy app instead of multiple CD-Roms, I decided to try Rosetta Stone, especially since the platform's Latin American Spanish lessons are only $119.99 (reg. $299) for life!

Getting Started with Rosetta Stone

Within five minutes of receiving my activation code, I was seamlessly diving into my first lesson. The setup was swift and straightforward, with one noteworthy detail: after using the activation code, a temporary password arrived via email for the initial sign-in. It's crucial to check your email for this password before attempting to log in because it will ask you to sign into your account without prompting you to "create an account."

Upon signing in, four plan categories awaited me, allowing me to tailor my learning journey:

  • Travel: Meeting people, dining out, navigating hotels, and exploring locations
  • Family: Understand relationships, give compliments, celebrate occasions, and communicate effectively with family
  • Work: Mastering business language, including politeness, invitations, time, money, and materials
  • Basics & Beyond: Daily items, routines, colors, sizes, and adapting to both formal and informal situations

Opting for the Basics and Beyond route, my lessons began focusing on topics essential for fundamental everyday interactions. While straightforward, the initial core lessons might be challenging for beginners. Rosetta Stone's immersion and repetition approach threw me into the deep end, but it proved more fun than frustrating because I realized I remembered much more Spanish than I thought I did.

Dive into Core Lessons

The first lessons involved matching phrases to corresponding images, with the option to reveal the English translation by pressing and holding the Spanish phrase. The core lessons gradually introduce words and phrases through image associations, prompting users to speak and practice pronunciation.

The standout feature is Rosetta Stone's pronunciation recognition software, offering real-time feedback on spoken words and phrases. A unique challenge is the delayed introduction of conjugation. Instead of explicit lessons, the app showcases distinctions through contextual images, making users decipher the singular and plural forms organically. As lessons progress, specific attention to conjugation becomes more apparent, leading to satisfying "a-ha!" moments.

Divided into 5 to 15-minute segments, core lessons are manageable and take 30 minutes or less, depending on pace. At the end of each session, a score provides feedback on performance.

Flexibility and Extended Learning Features

A standout feature is the flexibility to learn on your own terms and pick the path that will motivate you to learn more.

Rosetta Stone requires an internet connection to access its content. However, you can easily download lessons for on-the-go use, catering to commutes or long trips, when reliable service may not be readily available.

Changing my learning path is also very easy. If I want to change my core lesson plan, switching to categories easily and exploring topics like "Greeting and Introductions" or "Family and Community" is a click away.

There are also a few extra features that add to the unique learning experience:

Phrasebook:

This feature operates like a traditional travel phrase book, offering practical phrases related to meeting people, handling money, shopping, and more.

Audio Companion:

This feature provides downloadable audio lessons, allowing users to build vocabulary without direct device interaction, a boon for diverse learning environments.

Stories:

While the Stories feature introduces short Spanish stories for reading and listening, the lack of English translations poses a challenge for those not yet proficient in Spanish.

Future Outlook

Overall, my experience with Rosetta Stone's Spanish course has been enjoyable and illuminating. It revealed a depth of retained Spanish knowledge I didn't realize I had, fostering confidence in my ability to comprehend and speak the language. Since starting the core lessons, I have integrated Spanish into daily life, a testament to the program's practicality. My cat is even beginning to recognize when he is being talked about after I say, “Mi gato es gris y marrón.”

Fluency may not be the end result when I get to the end of my lessons, but it certainly feels like a stepping stone in the right direction. Rosetta Stone's structured, time-tested approach has given me confidence in my new journey.

For those eager to brush up their Spanish skills through a user-friendly and reputable platform, a lifetime subscription to Rosetta Stone's Latin American Spanish lessons at just $119.99 offers an enticing and fun opportunity!
